ARMOR OF ZION
Child Trafficking in the United States
Child trafficking—encompassing both labor and sex trafficking—remains a critical and deeply underreported crisis in the United States. Often tied to missing child cases, this issue is obscured by the lack of a universally accepted definition of “missing child” and the covert nature of trafficking operations. As a result, gathering reliable data is difficult, though recent reports offer vital insight. The 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report from the U.S. Department of State, along with supplemental 2023–2024 data, helps paint a clearer picture of this growing threat to our nation’s most vulnerable.
- An estimated 60% of child sex trafficking victims in the U.S. were previously part of the foster care or child welfare system.
- In 2023, over 365,000 missing child reports were submitted to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), many with suspected links to trafficking.
- Traffickers increasingly use social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps to target and groom minors—making digital vigilance more critical than ever.

The Crisis Hidden in Plain Sight
Facts That Demand Action
421,394 children were reported missing in the U.S. in 2019 alone, according to FBI data—the most recent fully audited year on record.
An estimated 1 in 6 endangered runaways were likely victims of child sex trafficking, based on NCMEC case data reviewed in 2023.
Top three states for reported human trafficking in 2023:
→ California (1,128 cases)
→ Texas (900 cases)
→ Florida (680 cases)
(Polaris Project data)$99 billion — the estimated annual global profit from sex trafficking alone, per the International Labour Organization.
(U.S.-specific child sex trafficking revenue remains unquantified due to data gaps.)

What the System Isn't Stopping
Based on the 2024 reports, here are the key figures for child trafficking in the US:
- In FY 2023, there were 800 open child labor trafficking cases involving 955 companies and about 5,800 children.
- The HHS served 577 child trafficking victims in 2023, with 191 new enrollees.
- Through school programs, 76 students were identified as potential victims in 2023.
- HHS issued 2,067 Eligibility Letters to foreign national child victims, with 24% in sex trafficking, 67% in labor trafficking, 3% in both, and 6% unknown.

Hard Evidence of a Hidden Epidemic
State-level data for 2024 is limited, but 2023 figures from World Population Review provide insight:
- California: 1,128 cases involving 2,045 victims.
- Texas: 900 cases involving 1,723 victims.
- Florida: 680 cases involving 1,172 victims. These numbers include both child and adult victims, but given that 31.6% of sex trafficking victims are minors, child trafficking is likely significant in these states.

The Alarming Reality
The global sex trafficking industry is worth $99 billion annually, but U.S.-specific child trafficking economic data is not detailed. Connections with sex work and drugs are noted, with traffickers often using substances to control victims, as seen in a 2014 Florida case.

Challenges and Limitations
Human trafficking is a hidden crime, and statistics may underrepresent the true scale due to unreported cases, language barriers, and victims’ fear of law enforcement. The data from 2024 reports is the most current, but given the current date (May 1, 2025), newer statistics may emerge later in the year from sources like the Department of State or National Human Trafficking Hotline.
